It’s time to put away the snow shovels and make room for spring sporting equipment and gardening tools. While you’re at it, take the time to add some creative storage and spruce up the look of your garage to bring it back to its former glory. Here’s how. ## Paint the Walls Painting your walls is a great garage improvement for spring because it’s warm enough to open up your garage for ventilation required to cure the paint. Patch any holes and add a fresh coat of white for a clean look, or choose a color that blends with the rest of your home decor if you’re looking for an upgrade. ## Add Custom Garage Cabinets [Custom cabinets](https://blog.bostongarage.com/cabinets) aren’t just for the kitchen. Custom garage cabinets add loads of storage space and allow you to keep all your stuff organized. You can add special hooks to hold tools such as rakes and spades or cabinets to hold items you don’t want the kids or pets to get into. The right combination of shelving, drawers and hooks will provide a place for everything so your garage has plenty of room for your car all year long. ## Improve the Lighting If you have only the light that comes on when you open the garage door, adding some new LED lighting will flood your garage with enough light to use it as a workshop if you like. Try adding track lighting to focus task lights where you need them. You can also light up the outside of your garage with motion sensor floodlights for added security. ## Update Your Garage Door If your garage door has seen better days, replacing it with a new model will make your life easier. After all, you don’t want to be stuck trying to lift a stuck door in the rain. Upgrading to a new garage door in a great new color adds to your home’s resale value, and spring is the perfect time to have one installed, since the danger of snow and ice have passed, allowing the job to be completed quickly. ## Set Up Workspaces In addition to custom garage cabinets, consider adding a countertop or workbench for a place to work on your favorite hobbies. Gardeners may wish to add a potting bench, while tinkerers need a work table with a vice. Try placing a counter or large table in a corner or along the wall — you can always pull the car out while you work if you need a bit more room to maneuver. To store your tools within easy reach, try adding [wall accessories](https://blog.bostongarage.com/organization) and specialty hooks to keep your items organized in plain sight. Going vertical saves you even more floor space — especially when you hang large items such as bikes, skis and skateboards.
