3 Common Misconceptions About Garage Floor Coatings

  • August 1, 2024

There are a lot of myths out there about garage floor coatings that lead to home owners who are dissatisfied with the look of their custom garage flooring. Yes, there are epoxy floor coating kits on the market. However, there are 3 misconceptions you need to review before you purchase one of these kits and redo your garage floor. Learn more to make an informed decision.

Myth #1: A DIY flooring kit will work the same as a professional epoxy coating.

Too many people jump on the chance to save a little bit of cash off the cost of a professional garage floor coating and buy the DIY kit.

It isn’t that the DIY kits are terrible. However, they simply do not have the same quality as professional garage epoxy products. As a result, you will spend a lot of time on a DIY floor coating that will not stand the test of time.

Before you buy the kit, ask yourself if you want to repeat the process in a few years or hire someone else down the road to do it for you. If you can, spend the extra money on a professional garage flooring that is designed to last.

Myth #2: I just need to clean the floor, then it will be ready for epoxy coating.

If you think a quick sweep and mop will prepare your floor for epoxy coating, you are sadly wrong. You will need to work hard to get your floor ready. A professional will first remove loose cement paste and surface contaminants. Then, he or she will actually open up the pores of the concrete using a special product. This helps the epoxy bond with the concrete, ensuring a strong finish. Only after all this work will a pro apply the epoxy.

If you are not willing to invest the time in properly cleaning and preparing your garage floor, you should definitely hire a garage floor coating pro to do the job the right way.

Myth #3: You need to redo your garage floor coatings every 1-3 years.

If you are considering DIY because you heard that epoxy floor coatings do not last, know that this statistic is only true for DIY kits – not professionally installed epoxy. We find that most homeowners get 15 years out of an epoxy floor with nothing more than occasional routine care. If the surface was not prepared properly, you will need to spend time on upkeep – but if you hire a pro, this won’t happen.

Before you make your final decision, why not reach out to a custom garage flooring expert to get an estimate on how much it would cost to epoxy your garage floor?
