4 Steps to an Organized Garage This Spring

  • May 13, 2015

As you come out of your winter hibernation, you will probably be making use of your garage for all sorts of spring and summer projects. Lawn care implements, gardening tools, and home improvement supplies all take up valuable space in your garage. Plus, you want plenty of room for stashing camping gear and sports equipment. Take the time now to organize your garage with these four steps to help keep it under control this spring and summer.

1. Install a wall storage system for gardening tools

As you start growing and pruning plants in your garden, you want to have your tools close at hand and organized so you can find what you are looking for. Use large double hooks to store rakes, hoes, shovels, and other long-handled gardening tools. Install a pegboard with smaller hooks for hand tools, like trowels. That way, everything is easy to see and reach.

2. Keep cold-weather items out of the way in overhead storage

When the seasons change, it’s time to put winter gear and tools where you won’t be tripping over them all summer. Store your skis, snowboards, sleds and snow shovels overhead on racks or ceiling-mounted shelves. Store holiday decorations in large bins on the top shelves of your wall cabinets or on a shelf mounted above your garage door. When you only need to get them down once a year, accessibility shouldn’t be a major concern.

3. Store frequently used items in clear plastic bins

The bulk of your garage storage will probably be in wall-mounted storage shelves. When putting items on these shelves, consider storing them in clear plastic bins. This strategy makes it easy to find what you’re looking for at a glance without having to waste time opening up several cardboard boxes. Clear plastic bins are especially useful for storing sports equipment, extra bedding, cleaning supplies, and seasonal clothing.

4. Stow tools away in dedicated storage

Your tools should have their own storage area in the garage, and the right kind of storage depends on how many tools you have and how frequently you use them. A tool cabinet on wheels will allow you to easily bring your tools to wherever you are working. If you want a dedicated work area, get a workbench with a sealed laminate or plastic surface that will resist stains. Tools can be stored in drawers in the workbench and on a pegboard above it.

Your garage is a unique space that reflects your hobbies and interests, and the best organizational strategies will depend on what you have and how you plan to use it.
